GROW games are tiny Flash puzzles from Japanese developer On (Eyezmaze) where you click items one at a time onto a scene — a world, a tower, a valley. The order you click them in is everything. Each item interacts with the others, evolving and levelling up depending on what came before it. There's no tutorial. No score. Just a quiet, charming world that rewards curiosity and punishes nothing — you just try again. The magic is in the feedback loops. A windmill you placed early might do nothing until you add a river three clicks later, and suddenly it's pumping water uphill and the whole landscape shifts. It's systems thinking wrapped in the gentlest possible package. The GROW games were made by a single person: On Nakayama, who has been quietly making these tiny worlds since the early 2000s. In 2019 he crowdfunded his own heart surgery, survived it, and kept making games. The game that taught me things connect.
